There it will send you to your main folder. Not all the way on bottom, there will be a tab on left that says "Open File Location", click it. Then on bottom of list select properties. The easiest way I find the main folder for SH5 is, if you have a shortcut of it on your desktop, right click on the icon. I am using Windows 7, so hope you can follow. I am using the Steam version of the game and can tell you all you need to know.

After a normal install from disc I would have been able to place my game anywhere on my pc, but now, using STAM I cannot seem to find a folder containing my SH5.exe and think I need to find that folder to install the different mods!?

Found this mod and will try it, and that will fix the dirty scratched up lenses but not sure if I'll be able to get higher magnification out of that.Anyone please tell me how to install mods on my SH5 bought and downloaded thorugh STEAM. So, I'm presently looking for a way to get higher magnification on the optics. When I have to get to ~1000 m on a bright sunny clear day to see that flag on that freighter is Finnish something is just not right. Scratched lenses, low max magnification, etc. Which has made me realize: what I REALLY do not like about "high realism" in SH5 (and I think this was true in SH4 too) is the crappy optics.

I had considered using Auto TDC instead of manual (I've done a couple hundred hours of 100% realism with "extra" realism from Ralles Mod Soup in SH4, and while my trig skills are a bit rusty, I'm sure I can get back to shooting good again), but apparently getting that to work with Real Navigation and everything else set to high "realism" is a bit of a chore. No idea how good or fun those are for this game. It just plain makes the game WAY more fun. I like the hardcore "realism" settings with a couple of exceptions: *I say boring, but I didn't mind it really.

Plus I could just turn off real navigation. I wonder if there's a way to get around some of the issues I had.

Then entered the North Sea and that's where I stopped, because I decided while I enjoyed the math and everything involved in full real navigation, I didn't enjoy not being able to plot waypoints that my crew would follow (because the captain wouldn't be giving rudder orders 24 hours a day.). Went on the next patrol which had me going through the Kiel canal which was pretty boring* with full realistic navigation since I had to basically steer the boat myself on 4-8x time compression to get through it in a decent amount of time. Then I sailed to Kiel, crashed on entering the harbor (fortunately I had been making periodic saves, even with the risk of save corruption that nobody has been able to adequately explain to me), and eventually docked there to end the patrol. Yeah, I did the first patrol in late August/early september, which is a decent little tutorial because there isn't really much that will hurt you (not nothing, but not nearly as much as later on). Plus, I seem to have it happen most often in the sub pen, which is not on the boat and thus doesn't have the same camera options anyway. The only way to hopefully fix it is to reload the save and eventually that works. I have no external cameras, nor camera shortcuts. In SH3/4 you'd just hit one of the different views (since the boat didn't have free walking like SH5). It's easy to fix.when you have camera shortcuts turned on and external views and whatnot, since if you switch to one of them it fixes the camera. The worst part about that error message is, it's just saying that the camera (viewpoint) is outside of the playable/renderable space. What did the trick for me was to install a version of the Uplay installer someone had uploaded to a Steam "Guide" page, I'll see if I can find that. Even now, the damn auto-connect to the Uplay servers from the vanilla Steam copy (which is necessary to complete first time set up of the game) did not work right for me. Note: in the past it was apparently a real hassle to try to get that mod to work with the Steam version of the game. Ubisoft should give those guys who made all those mods and the compilation a cut! I would've never bought the game had I not seen some pretty compelling info about the mod and yeah, that mod makes that game "worth it." Especially at the $10 it is now being sold for on Steam. What I can say is: With the Wolves of Steel mod installed it is FANTASTIC!

I don't know for sure because I didn't play it much vanilla. Apparently at release it was a nightmare and even now the vanilla game is probably fairly lacking.

This game has suffered a lot of bad press probably deservedly so.
